MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF MALAYSIA
On 31 August, MINURSO marked the Independence Day of Malaysia by raising its national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune.
On this day, Malaysia celebrates its independence of 1957. The official festivities take place in the capital Kuala Lumpur, as well across the peninsula and throughout its 878 islands.
Since 1960 Malaysia has been contributing peacekeepers from the Malaysian Armed Force and the Royal Malaysian Police. As of 30 July 2024, 877 Malaysian peacekeepers serve in peace operations worldwide including nine UNMOs in MINURSO.
The national flag of Malaysia consists of 14 alternating red and white stripes representing the federal territory and the 13 member states.
