On 31 August, MINURSO marked the Independence Day of Malaysia raising the national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune.

In this day, Malaysia celebrates its independence of 1957. The official activities are taking place in the capital Kuala Lumpur, as well across the peninsula and throughout its 878 islands.

Since 1960 Malaysia has contributed over 29,000 peacekeepers from the Malaysian Armed Force and the Royal Malaysian Police. As of 30 April 2023, 860 Malaysian peacekeepers serve in peace operations worldwide including with MINURSO.

The national flag of Malaysia consists of 14 alternating red and white stripes representing the federal territory and the 13 member states.
