MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF GHANA

On 06 March, MINURSO celebrated Ghana’s National Day by raising its flag at the Mission headquarters in Laayoune next to the UN flag. On this day, Ghana marks its independence from the United Kingdom in 1957.

Ghanaian men and women have served as United Nations peacekeepers for many years, participating in operations that have stretched from the Sinai to the African continent. Ghana is now the seventh largest contributing country to UN peacekeeping operations, as of November 2023 there were 2664 personnel serving in a number of peacekeeping missions worldwide including MINURSO.

Ghana’s flag consists of three strips: the red represents the blood of those who died for independence; yellow stands for Gold (one of Ghana’s riches); green symbolizes the country's rich forests, and the Black Star stands for African Freedom.

Happy National Day Ghana!
