MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF EGYPT

On 23 July, MINURSO marked the celebration of Egypt’s National Day by hoisting the country’s flag at the Mission HQ next to the UN flag.

Egypt is a longstanding and committed contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Since 1960 over 30,000 Egyptian police and military personnel participated in 37 UN missions. On the Peacekeepers Day, the Secretary-General Antonio Guterres awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal posthumously to four Peacekeepers from Egypt who lost their lives in 2021.

In MINURSO, Egypt is the country with the highest number of women and men deployed as military observers who perform important tasks at the Mission's HQ, the Tindouf Liaison Office and all nine Team Sites. [Link to the photogallery]

On the National Day, Egypt commemorates the Revolution of 1952 that led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic.
