On 12 June, MINURSO celebrated Russia’s National Day by raising its flag at the Mission headquarters in Laayoune next to the UN flag. On this day, in 1991, the Russian parliament formally issued the Declaration of Russian State Sovereignty. The holiday was officially established the following year. The Russian Federation is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide, including to MINURSO.

Russia’s flag consists of three horizontal stripes: the lower red stripe symbolizes the Earth, the blue stripe stands for the sky, and the upper white stripe represents the world of God.
