On 8 March 2022, MINURSO commemorated  International Women’s Day under the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. At Mission HQ in Laayoune the Acting Head of Mission, Nick Birnback, led a ceremony and military parade in the presence of MINURSO civilian and military personnel.  During the event, the Acting Head of Mission read the Secretary’s General message underlining the need for more women in leading positions “to address the climate crisis, develop green jobs and build a more just and sustainable world.” Chief of Mission Support Veneranda Mukandoli-Jefferson and the Acting Force Commander Commodore Faustina Boakyewaa Anokye also spoke and highlighted the central role that women play in peacekeeping and the importance of our continued efforts to achieve gender parity throughout the UN system.
