MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS : NATIONAL DAY OF MALAWI
On 6 July, MINURSO marked Malawi’s Independence Day by raising the Malawian flag alongside the UN flag at the Mission’s headquarters.
This day commemorates Malawi’s independence from British colonial rule and the adoption of its current name, which means “Flames of Fire,” inspired by the sunlit shimmer of Lake Malawi.
The country is often referred to as “the warm heart of Africa” due to the warmth and hospitality of its people. The Malawi flag features a black stripe that represents the people of Africa. The red stands for the blood spilt in Malawi's struggle for independence, while the green symbolizes the country's vegetation. The rising sun represents the dawn of freedom.
Malawi began participating in UN peacekeeping missions in 1994 and it deploys around 800 uniformed personnel to various UN operations around the world, including MINURSO.
Thak you , Malawi!
