Mine Action in the true sense of the word came to being in 2008 when a Senior Technical Advisor (STA) was deployed to Western Sahara and a Mine Action Coordination Centre (MACC) was set up as part of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), with the task of developing a comprehensive mine action response.
