11 Oct 2012 - On 27 September, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara and Head of Mission, Wolfgang Weisbrod-Weber, awarded Force Commander, Major General Abdul Hafiz, along with twelve other military personnel, the United Nations Medal for their service in MINURSO.
11 Oct 2012 - Hervé Ladsous, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, arrived in Laayoune on 10 October. He will be visiting MINURSO to review operations and to meet with the Mission leadership. He plans to travel to two Team Sites, west and east of the berm, as well as to Tindouf and Rabat where he will meet with officials from both parties, Morocco and Polisario.
23 Sep 2011 - This year - on its 30th anniversary - the theme of the United Nations International Day of Peace is "Peace and Democracy: make your voice heard".
The Officer in Charge of MINURSO and Force Commander, Major-General Abdul Hafiz, presided over a short and simple ceremony celebrating the Day at the Mission Parade Ground.
02 Mar 2011 - On February 28, the Frente Popular para la Liberación de Saguia el-Hamra y de Río de Oro (POLISARIO) destroyed 1,506 anti-personnel mines in stockpiles. Stockpile destruction is internationally recognized as one of the pillars of mine action, hence the importance of this date for mine action in Western Sahara.
On 2 December 2010, MINURSO commemorated World Aids Day and the International Volunteer Day with joint events to promote awareness about HIV/AIDS and volunteering in the United Nations.
09 Mar 2010 - On 5 February 2010 the Secretary General's Special Representative for Western Sahara and Head of MINURSO, Mr. Hany Abdel Aziz, accompanied by the Force Commander, Major General Jiming Zhao, and the presence of all personnel of the HQ, in the mission's parade ground, awarded a group of Military Observers from Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Malaysia and Pakistan with the UN Medal.
31 Aug 2004 - The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Western Sahara, Alvaro de Soto, will be received by H.M. King Mohammed VI and senior Moroccan officials on 6-7 September 2004. He will be received by the leadership of the Frente POLISARIO on 12 September 2004. He is in contact with the governments of Algeria and Mauritania regarding visits to Algiers and Nouakchott soon thereafter.
22 Jun 2004 - The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara has welcomed the announcement yesterday by the Frente POLISARIO that it intends to free 100 Moroccan prisoners of war.
