MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF SWITZERLAND
On 1 August, MINURSO marked Switzerland's National Day by hoisting the Swiss flag alongside the UN flag at the Mission Headquarters.
This day celebrates the Federal Charter of 1291, Switzerland's oldest foundational document, in which the Central Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Nidwalden pledged mutual support against threats and injustice. Since 1994, 1 August has been officially recognized as a public holiday.
Switzerland has contributed military observers and liaison officers to UN peacekeeping missions since 1990. As of 31 May 2025, Switzerland contributes a total of 22 peacekeepers to UN missions around the world, including two currently serving with MINURSO .
