MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF SWITZERLAND
On 1 August, MINURSO observed the National Day of Switzerland by raising its flag at the Mission HQ next to the UN flag.
On this Day, Switzerland commemorates the signing of the Federal Charter of 1291, which is Switzerland's oldest constitutional document. In this ancient pact, the valley communities of Central Switzerland, Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden pledged to help each other resist any threat of violence or injustice. On 1 August 1994, the Day became a public holiday.
Since 1990, Switzerland has sent many military observers and liaison officers to UN peacekeeping operations.
Its peacekeepers currently serve in five peacekeeping missions, including MINURSO. In January 2023, Switzerland joined the UN Security Council for the first time as a non-permanent member for two years. In MINURSO, two United Nations Observers from Switzerland currently serve in the Mission's team sites.
The national flag of Switzerland consists of an equilateral white cross in the center of a square red field.
Thank you, Switzerland!
