On 03 October  MINURSO celebrated ‘German Unity Day’ by raising the country’s flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune.

German Unity Day, which falls on 3 October, has been the German national holiday since 1990 when the former German Democratic Republic officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany had been an important contributor to UN Peacekeeping Operations for years. Its peacekeepers are deployed in seven peacekeeping missions worldwide including MINURSO.

The German flag is a tricolor, made of three equal horizontal bands: black in the top, red in the middle and gold in the bottom. The black and gold combination relates to the colors on the semi-official coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire.
