MINURSO says goodbye to our friend Omar

MINURSO lost one if its longest serving staff members this week. Omar Al-Khateeb passed away after a heart attack on Sunday 27 February 2022. The Mission honoured him  at an all staff Town Hall.

A transport and logistics specialist, Omar was a peacekeeper for nearly 30 years, serving with the UN in Iraq first and then moving to MINURSO on 25 February 2000. Before moving to Laayoune he spent many years working in MINURSO Awsard Team Site where he (literally) helped to keep the Mission moving forward. As an active member of the Field Staff Union, Omar always had time to assist his fellow MINURSO-ites in resolving any issues and in particular, letting the voices of the Mission’s national staff be heard.  His broad smile, and warm and caring personality will be deeply missed—as will he.
