MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA
On 15 August, MINURSO marked South Korea’s Independence Day by raising the national flag at its headquarters in Laayoune, marking the end of 35 years of Japanese colonial rule.
The day is celebrated across the country with military and civilian parades, as well as political gatherings.
Since becoming a UN member in 1991, the Republic of Korea has actively contributed to the organization through peacekeeping efforts, development aid, and the advancement of human rights. In December 2021, Seoul hosted the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial, where 57 member states and two international organizations reaffirmed their support for UN Peacekeeping. As of 31 May 2025, 526 Korean personnel are deployed worldwide, including three UNMOs with MINURSO.
The white on the national flag is a traditional color in Korean culture and it stands for peace and purity. The circle in the flag's center symbolizes balance in the world: the red half represents the sky, and the blue half the land. Together, the trigrams embody movement and harmony as fundamental principles.
