MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
On 1 October 2024, MINURSO raised the flag of the People’s Republic of China at the Mission HQ in Laayoune to mark the country’s National Day.
The Day commemorates Mao Zedong's formal proclamation of the establishment of the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949.
China is a permanent member of the Security Council and it deployed its first military observers in 1990.
Nowadays, China is the second largest financial contributor to the UN peace operations budget, and one of the top ten Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to UN
peacekeeping, with 1860 peacekeepers deployed, including 9 in MINURSO.
The red background of the Chinese flag symbolizes the Chinese Communist Revolution. The five stars and their relationship represent the unity of Chinese people.
