MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF INDIA
On 15 August, MINURSO raised the Indian national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune to mark the country’s National Day.
The Day is a historic milestone in India's history due to the ending of nearly two centuries of British rule. It is celebrated through flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs and events in governmental and non-governmental institutions.
India is one of the largest troop contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions. As of 30 June 2024, 5466 Indian peacekeepers serve in peace operations worldwide including 03 UNMOs currently in MINURSO.
The Indian flag consists of three horizontal strips: the Saffron color at the top stands for strength and courage of the country. The white strip in the middle indicates peace and truth. The green strip at the bottom represents fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
