MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF GERMANY

On 3 October,  MINURSO celebrated the ‘German Unity Day’ by raising the German flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune.

German Unity Day, which falls on 3 October, has been a German national holiday since 1990, when the former German Democratic Republic officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany had been an important contributor to UN peacekeeping operations for years. Its 244 peacekeepers are deployed in peacekeeping missions worldwide, including 4 in MINURSO.

The German flag's black, red, and gold colors symbolize a history of struggle and a pursuit of liberty, unity, and democracy: the black stands for the darkness of occupation, red for the blood of the fighters, and gold for the eventual light of freedom.

Alles Gute zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit!
