MINURSO’s peacekeepers: National Day of Chad

On 11 August, MINURSO observed the Independence Day of Chad by raising the national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune next to the UN flag.

On this day, Chad obtained  its independence from France in 1960. It has been  one of the contributors to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide  including to MINURSO. The blue helmets from Chad who died tragically  were honored by the Secretary General on 26 May 2022 at Dag Hammarskjold  Medal Ceremony .

The colors of the national flag represent the sky and the waters of the country (blue), the sun and the desert of northern Chad (yellow), and the sacrifice of the struggle for the freedom (red).
