MINURSO’s peacekeepers: National Day of Chad

On 11 August, MINURSO observed the Independence Day of Chad by raising the national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune next to the UN flag.

Chad is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations deploying 1,400 Military and Police Officers to United Nations Peacekeeping. In 2021, it was ranked 12, in terms of the provided staff officers and troops,  among 121 troops contributing countries. The blue helmets from Chad who died tragically  were honored by the Secretary General on 26 May 2022 at Dag Hammarskjold  Medal Ceremony . In MINURSO, Chadian military observers work in challenging conditions at the Team Sites east and west of the berm.

Chad , Africa’s fifth-largest country, gained its independence on 11 August 1960. The colors of the national flag represent the sky and the waters of the country (blue), the sun and the desert of northern Chad (yellow), and the sacrifice of the struggle for the freedom (red).
