MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF HUNGARY
On 20 August, MINURSO marked Hungary’s National Day by raising the Hungarian flag at its headquarters in Laayoune.
This day commemorates the establishment of the Hungarian state, which dates back to the year 1000 AD.
Across Hungary, the occasion is celebrated with various ceremonies, including flag-raising events, air and water parades, traditional arts, and street performances.
Hungary began contributing uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping in 1995, starting with a deployment to UNFICYP in Cyprus. As of 31 May 2025, 35 Hungarian peacekeepers are serving in UN missions, including seven assigned to MINURSO.
The colors of the national flag represent strength (red), hope (green), and national pride and allegiance (white).
Boldog nemzeti ünnepet!
